Come to EXPO 2016 and witness an Industry in Motion

By Rocky Marcelle, senior manager - Web Publishing

Some truly believe the old adage the more things change, the more they stay the same. With the March release of the FCC's Rate-of-Return USF Reform Order, things changed. The Order put forth some new standards and revised regulations that will alter several segments of our industry in the coming years. We are, as NECA EXPO 2016 proclaims, an industry in motion. It's almost a sure bet things won't stay the same.

Later this fall, join your colleagues in Las Vegas to learn more about the changes at NECA EXPO 2016 at the MGM Grand. The event kicks off on Sunday, November 13, and wraps at noon on Thursday, November 17.

Norm!

A familiar friend and highly regarded Washington insider, Norm Ornstein takes the Vegas stage as a featured speaker, opening Monday's general session. Norm is a long-time observer of Congress and politics who has served as an election eve analyst in past elections. He has enlightened past EXPO audiences with his keen insight into the political climate. And with EXPO coming just days after an enormously interesting presidential election, the timing is perfect for Norm to give us his take on the results.

After the lunch break, two panel discussions, a special presentation and some R&R are on tap:

  • Jeff Dupree, NECA vice president of Government Relations, will moderate a panel of rural association representatives addressing the state of regulatory change and the USF Reform Order implications.

  • The topical issue of cybersecurity will take precedence next, beginning with a presentation from representatives of the Las Vegas home office of the FBI. A panel discussion amongst cybersecurity industry experts will follow, moderated by Iris Carrasquillo, NECA manager of tariffs and training in our Omaha region office.

  • The EXPO Vendor Showcase and Reception that concludes our first day is a welcome break, allowing for further informal discussion, learning about new services and products displayed by our vendors, and some well-earned relaxation and fun (watch for "celebrities" mingling in among the attendees).

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: something for every level

Breakout sessions are offered throughout the day on Tuesday and Wednesday, encompassing all experience levels by presenting several current topics and a few core subjects multiple times over the two-day period.  Before classes on those mornings consultants and vendors will be conducting 30-minute sessions to engage you in discussion. Stay tuned for more info on these sessions.

Several of our breakout offerings on Tuesday and Wednesday will focus on rule changes and implementation effects resulting from the USF Reform Order, including the always extremely popular and well-attended USF Reform session. Other sessions will cover tariff, regulatory and technical topics. A sampling of the sessions offered:

  • Intermediate level sessions include Average Schedule Update, Switched and Special Access Transport Options and Evolving Technology in Tariff 5. We'll also keep you apprised of policy news with updates on the FCC and current telecom legislation.

  • As always, first time attendees can get up to speed by attending core classes such as NECA Overview, Navigating NECA Resources and NECA and USAC: Collaborating to Support You.

  • Taking a breather from technical and regulatory issues, other sessions include: Services for the Aging: There's No Place Like Home!; Getting Caught in the Social NETworking; and, in line with our theme of changing times in the industry, How to Keep Employees Engaged.

EXPO 2016 will wrap up Thursday morning with two panel presentations, Strategies and Marketing for Cutting Edge Technology Transition and State USF.
