In Focus: August 2016

By Bill Hegmann, President and CEO

By the time you read this, the two major political parties will have picked their presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. As the race heats up, we should hear more about where the candidates stand on issues concerning our industry, as both parties' platforms have tech agendas.

Fortunately, we have Norm Ornstein to sort it all out at EXPO [see Come to EXPO 2016 and witness an industry in motion], which starts on November 13, the Sunday after the election. Norm is a heralded political commentator and will headline our opening day general session. This is Norm's third post-election EXPO appearance; those of you who heard him in 2008 and 2014 know he will sort out election results and tell us what might be in store as a new administration takes office.

Meanwhile, all is quiet on Capitol Hill as Congress is on an extended election year recess until after Labor Day. [See Washington Report: the calm before the storm.] It is good to see legislators have recently taken action on the rural call completion issue, with the Senate Commerce Committee unanimously approving a bill that would govern intermediate carriers (often called least cost routers).

There is no summer break at the FCC, as work continues on issues such as universal service reform. Stay tuned as NECA keeps you informed on how these revisions affect you. The FCC is also facing Congressional scrutiny of the Lifeline program, as House members on both sides of the aisle are performing their own investigations into allegations of waste, fraud and abuse in the program.

Also, with this issue of Access, we introduce a new reading format that gives you options you did not have before, such as searching for articles based on one or multiple topics, or by date. You can also click on the tags below each item to view all articles in that topic or month. I hope you enjoy these new features.
